Wallace McDowall Ltd were proud to sponsor a local hockey team, The Flyers. Match report below;
Flyers Ice Hockey Team Sponsored by Wallace McDowall won the Scottish Cup in an all Ayrshire final at Dundee Ice Arena on Sunday 14th April beating Ayr Jets 4-1 in the final. Flyers battled through the preliminary rounds beating off competition from Paisley Panthers with the highlight being a deke move by Santi Buesa to move on to meet Dumfries Demons. Flyers beat of the Demons with some strong skating from the Holland, Smith & Gibson line and a clinical finish by our own Engineer Graeme Watson to progress. Sunday saw Flyers facing the home side Dundee Michelin and despite some great saves from net minder Lobban Flyers lost 3-2 to set up a must win game against Edinburgh Knights, Flyers won comfortably with Colin McClean on form between the pipes but unfortunately lost Winger Holland with a dislocated knee. Short benched and with a semi-final against the current Champions Paisley Blackhawks Flyers re-organised and the centre duo of Danny Murray and Phil Connor took the game to them. Paisley pulled the net minder in the dying stages of the game to set up a dramatic finish with Phil Connor shooting the puck the length of the ice into the empty net to send Flyers into the all Ayrshire final against Ayr Jets.
Jets struck first in the final with a nice move from Morris putting them in front. However a great effort by Connor from David Evan's face-off levelled the game and then Jamie Carruth (Named Defence Man of the Tournament) blasted a slap shot from the point to put Flyers ahead. Despite efforts from the Jets, Flyer's Colin Connor broke up the play in the neutral zone to enable Marc Smith to pick up the puck and go on a breakaway to end the game for the Jets and confirm The Flyers as the Scottish Champions.
Flyers play out of Auchenharvie Ice Rink and their next game is Sunday 21rd, Face Off 5.30Back to News
