06/12/2012 Equipment update
During the last half of the year we have completed the automation of our Trumpf T3000 Punch giving it the capability to load and unload sheets, sort parts and run continously without operator intervention. We have also just completed the installation an additional T3000 which now doulbles our capacity in punching. We hope to add automation to it during next year.
Our machining department have recently had a new Hurco VMX30 vertical mill installed to increase their capacity. Our Bridgeport vertical mill is being replaced in a few weeks after giving many years of good service manufacturing smaller batches and manual work.
Although some of our customers are being effected by work moving to Asia we are fortunate to have a wide customer base and have been picking up additional work in other products especially lighter materials. Our sales team are currently seeking to fill capacity in heavier guage materials and we also expect to increase our powder coating facility in the first half of next year with the purchase of a new plant that will allow us to cope with the demand.
16/06/2012 New Laser Commisioned
Our new Trumpf L3030 L20 4kW laser cutting machine is now in production. The laser comes with the latest CO2 laser cutting technology capable of cutting up to 20mm mild steel and 16mm stainless steel. The sheet master and twin cutting tables can handle material up to 3Mt by 1.5mt.
20/12/2011 6 Sigma Black Belt
Derek Johnstone (Technical Manager) has recently been awarded his 6 Sigma Black Belt certificate.
Derek who has been with the company for 26 years will now focus much of his time on leading 6 Sigma Quality & lean improvement projects in various areas of the company.
01/12/2011 LVD PPEB 220 /40 Easy-Form Brake Press and Sirius 4kW Laser with Automated Towers
The LVD 220/40 Easy-Form Brake Press has been commissioned and is now in production. This increases our folding capacity to 220 tonne. The new machine can handle sheets up to 4 Mt wide and is equipped with LVD’s Easy-Form technology to provide highly consistent angles of bend.
With the addition of our smaller Trumpf C60 press last month we now have 8 brake presses ranging from 1Mt x 35 tonne up to 4Mt x 220 tonne
The LVD Sirius 3015 Laser with Compact Tower and 4 kW Fanuc laser increase our cutting capacity to 6 lasers.
The machine can cut up to 20mm mild steel and can be programmed to run 24 hours a day including unmanned operation during the weekends using the storage capacity of the automated tower loading system.
01/12/2011 Trumpf TruPunch 3000 Electric
The installation of our new Trumpf Punch was completed in October. The machine uses the latest high efficiency electric punching head to cut material up to 6.4mm. Efficiency is increased further when the programmes run without producing a scrap skeleton. Currently the machine is installed with a SortMaster Box but we expect it to be fully automated early next year by adding the latest version of Trumpf’s compact SheetMaster loading system.

Recently two of our employees completed 25 years with the Company.
Mark Wyper, on the left, started as a semi-skilled welder and is now an experienced Brake Press Operator.
Derek Johnstone, on the right, is now Technical Manager after joining the company as an apprentice sheet metal
worker.
21/03/2011 2011 Sponsored Rafting Event
After a two year break to recover our strength the Company will again enter in a fund raising rafting challenge on behalf of Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland. 28/07/2010 New Hurco CNC Lathe installed.
A new Hurco TM6 CNC Lathe has been installed. The machine which comes with a magazine bar feed unit, will enhance and increase our capacity in the precision machining area.
28/07/2010 New Trumpf Trubend 3066 Brake Press
A Further Trumpf Brake press has been installed. The 66 Tonne 2mtr machine will be used solely on light gauge materials to improve our capabilities on high tolerance work, especially on aluminium and stainless.
23/02/2010 Second Cloos Robot installed
We have now installed a second robot welder to improve production of large volume parts. The robot identical to the one installed last year is now in operation 24 hours a day and has increased our welding capacity greatly. Due to the success of the first installation we had no hesitation in installing this additional machine. The efficiency of these additions was critical to our success in retaining and growing existing business.
30/03/2009 Sponsored Rafting Challenge
Staff from the Company recently participated in a fund raising rafting challenge on behalf of Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland. The event raised around 48000 towards the charity. Wallace McDowall team came in a close second in the race, pipped at the post by a strong team from Scottish Seafarms Ltd. 12/02/2009 New Trumpf 4kW Laser
The installation of a new Trumpf 2525, 4kW laser increases our compliment of 4 kW laser to 4. This machine replace the older model 2530 that has given us excellant service over the last 10 years or so. The increase in power fron 3.3kw means we will have the capacity to cut up to 20mm mild steel on all four machines.
29/01/2009 New LVD Brake Press
An additional Brake Press from LVD has been installed this month. This brings the number of brake presses to 6 ranging from 35 to 170 tonne. The LVD PPEB 135 is now in full production alongside the similar machine we instaled last year.
29/11/2008 Wallace McDowall Judged Most Focused Company in Scotland
Directors of the company recently collected an award on behalf of the company in a ceremony hosted by Stephen Jardine and attended by 500 guests in the Radisson Hotel in Glasgow. We were judged as the most focussed company from the top 250 in Scotland. Judges from the organisers visited the factory earlier in the month and were very impressed with the facility and its employees.
12/10/2008 New Cloos Robot Welder
We have installed a robot welder to improve production of large volume parts. The robot supplied by Cloos is now in operation 24 hours a day and has increased our welding capacity greatly. Due to the success of this project we are already considering additonal robot welders and a new brake press to handle the increased throughput of components.
12/03/2008 New LVD Axel 4kW Laser
Wallace McDowall have now completed the installation of a new LVD Axel fully automated 4KW Laser system. This new Laser bring the total capacity up to 5 Lasers all working 24 hour /day. The new machine is capable of working in a lights out unmanned environment. This gives us further scope for improved capacity as well as quicker turnround even over the weekend. To complete the capacity flow we have also installed an LVD 135 brake press complete with a Laser checking device.
